That table is indeed highly inaccurate. Is it really official? I have used Sony's original 4GB memory (MSX-M4GS) both in P990i and K750i and according to the table this should have not been possible?!

The memory expansion on ALL SE phones that are MS Pro compatible supports atleast up to 32GB, since it has to be compatible with the Memory Stick Pro architecture (max. 32GB addressable memory).

So while memory sticks continue to use the MS Pro architecture, all current and new SE phones will accept any cards SE bring out up to the 32GB capacity.

The size is not a memory issue, as the card contents are not loaded into memory when the card is browsed. K750 came out with only 1GB claimed top memory capacity, yet 4GB can be used without any side effects whatsever, dispelling the myth that newer cards will be slower. W810 is virtually the same thing as a K750.

Currently, most if not all SE phones support both FAT16 (up to 2GB max), and FAT32 (upt to 2TB, which obviously is limited by the ms pro hardware to 32GB).

my experience with a 4GB sandisk MSD in my K750 is that it takes a significantly longer time to power up the phone than with my 2GB MSD. when the phone is switched on, the SE logo displays for maybe 3 or 4 minutes before you are prompted to enter your PIN. i can only suppose this is due to the phone scanning the MSD. however, once past that, it operates at normal speed.

the speed difference is apparently with the MSD as opposed to the phone itself. i use a card reader to load data onto my MSD's. completely filling up my 2GB MSD with the reader takes 12 to 13 min. however, doing the same with the 4GB takes approximately an hour. although i am putting double the amount of data on the 4GB, the write speed is clearly slower.

for a while i wondered if i had a defective MSD. (and maybe i do. the only way to know that is if other users out there tell me that they have had a different experience) however, in browsing other forums for other devices, such as those for palm and WM5, using SD and miniSD cards, it has become apparent to me that the tradeoff for the very large capacity cards (4GB and beyond) is a decrease in speed.

from what i have read, many users have said that they experience write speeds of about 1/2 to 1/3 of their lower capacity cards. read speeds seem to be ok though. some have been able to somewhat improve the performance by formatting the cards in their readers using FAT32 and 32k clusters.

in any case, as i said, the only noticable difference with me and my K750 with a 4GB card is a longer startup and slower write speed. if the situation could be improved, i would definitely be happier. but at the same time, the sacrifice is perfectly ok with me since the benefit of having double the amount of data outweighs everything.

i can only imagine that the 8GB MSD speed differences will be even more pronounced. but again, you will forget that once you experience the benefits of having 8GB in your pocket!

@masseur: make a sticky saying what MSPD/MSD are compatible with phones. i think it will avoid some questions. just a thought.

@senn - Nice INPUT dude. Do you think that the PROCESS will be the SAME, say, you had a different BRAND of - card? What if it's a - SONY (as you have a Sandisk) . . .
