I have the last firmware R1FA016, and the proximity sensor does not work,
does it work to you?

It does work it's just slow to turn the screen off.
Once it is off you can see the proximity sensor working by watching the screen immediately re-activate when you move it away from your head in a call.

I would expect it to turn the screen off as soon as you put it up to your head but I guess SE thought otherwise.
Is this what you mean by how they work in other phones?

basically when you are using the phone, your face is on or very very close to the phone physically. because your face can touch the screen, the sensor will detect and basically shut down the screen - so you don't accidently press a button with your face.
