Apple Device Upgrades to iOS 8 Moving Slow

13% decline in adoption, compared to iOS 7.

By Matt Clark

While the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus appear to be performing well since the devices' recent launch, other iOS device users are reacting slower in upgrading to iOS 8. As reported by 9to5Mac, iOS share numbers reported by Apple on its developer portal show only a 1 percent increase in iOS 8 usage between September 21 and October 5, 2014.

The data on the Apple page is formulated by comparing the iOS version of users accessing the App Store. Keep in mind, those millions of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units were shipped with iOS 8--so this is pretty weird. During the same period, iOS 7 share only fell by two percent, while users of versions prior to iOS 7 actual rose by one percent.

Engadget notes analytics firm Fiksu shows iOS 7 usage within about the same time frame last year was around 60 percent. While the results are strange, the slow acceptance of iOS 8 could be due in some part to recent update troubles, including a botched 8.0.1 release which removed call functionality from some iPhones.
