No. i found an issue whereby sometimes, if I am using Facebook and read the comments on a post or image, I press the back button to leave the comments but nothing happens. So I press it a couple of times more and it closes the app down.

You enabled smart cleaner?? Try disabling or vice versa.

Can't disable smart cleaner.
It seems to be a bit better the last few days, I think there's a gesture that I'm doing is causing them to freeze

Under settings, at the top search function, type smart. Then disable from there. Reboot your phone if the search function not working.

Unreliable when used to unlock the phone, however, I find that it works perfectly every time when used with an app, such as a banking app.

Same here, with the xperia 1, unreliable but never miss with my banking app, weird
