Would somebody be ever so kind to orient us lowly mortals what 3G, EDGE and UMTS are?

1G:
The first generation of analogue mobile phone technologies including AMPS, TACS and NMT

2G:
The second generation of digital mobile phone technologies including GSM, CDMA IS-95 and D-AMPS IS-136

2.5G:
The enhancement of GSM which includes technologies such as GPRS

Ellaboration on the above:
You get ordinary GSM (1g) - basic voice and text messaging.
This was followed by 2G with some data capabilities - CSD/HSCSD 9.6kbps - approx 14kbps
2.5G (the GPRS era) is a little faster than 2G. about 28 - 56kbps.

3G: Stands for 3rd generation mobile network, which is able to handle higher data rates/speeds and other advanced media features.

GPRS: General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) enabled networks offer 'always-on', higher capacity, Internet-based content and packet-based (theoretical max. of 172kbps) data services. This enables services such as colour Internet browsing, e-mail on the move, powerful visual communications, multimedia messages and location-based services.

EDGE: Enhanced Data rate for GSM Evolution - EDGE (or Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution) is a 3G technology that delivers broadband-like data speeds to mobile devices (essentially an Air interface). It allows consumers to connect to the Internet and send and receive data, including digital images, web pages and photographs, three times faster than possible with an ordinary GSM/GPRS network. EDGE enables GSM operators to offer higher-speed mobile-data access, serve more mobile-data customers, and free up GSM network capacity to accommodate additional voice traffic.

UMTS: Universal Mobile Telephone System - the word universal should give you a good idea what this means.

A bit out of topic: HSDPA (high-speed downlink packet access) is called like a 3,5G.
