my S700 takes great daytime shots, but its outclassed by my W900 for low light conditions, long distance and macro shots...

dimenxian: manufacturing costs. CMOS = cheaper

batesie: exactly my point- in the hands of a pro photographer, shots taken on both cams can be mixed up

there's more to sensor type decision-making that leads to the final market price of the phone- and choosing CMOS sensors allow them to get put more premium on the model with the less manuf. cost

one rule of business is you price the goods as to how much the market is willing to pay, not premium over how manuf. costs. then there's the advertising factor, etc.

There's also the factor that CCD components currently take up more space than CMOS sensors.

There are many professional 6mp+ SLR camera's out on the market today, and at the beginning when CMOS sensors were first introduced they were outbeaten in quality by the conventional CCD sensors. But now that technology has caught up CMOS sensors can be just as good as CCD sensors.

True. CCD are slightly bigger and use more power too.

In the review of the K800 over on Mobile-review, Eldar hints that there may be more high-end models from SE this year. I am looking forward to it.

this phrase has always intrigued me. if CMOS has already caught up to the CCD sensor capabilities, how come the CCD technology hasn't been improved the same was as the CMOS did?
