A 3g sim looks like any other 2g sim, however the sim card allows you to access the 3g network,

a 3g sim is also know as a USIM.

Regarding 02 coverage.

o2 is pushing out there 3g network very hard at the moment and most places should have coverage in 6 months time.

Orange currenlty has the largest 2.5g/3g coverage of all networks. However 3 has the most coverage of 3g.

Im on Orange and 02 and i can confirm that 02 is getting a lot better. I know get coverage in places i didnt (Although still very poor)
Orange 3g is strting to be very strong, I get it in most places and know starting to get it in the country side where i wouldnt have got before.

my office has an O2 transmitter on the roof, which is supposed to have 3g, however I rarely get a 3g signal. My collegues have orange and 3 phones and always get a 3g signal.
O2 seem to have quite poor 3g coverage at the moment

The o2 website says my postcode has excellent 3G coverage but this is not the case. For the last 3 months on my K800i I can not send more than a 1 page text when i'm using the o2 3G service I can however send more than a 1 page text when I have my handset using 2.5G as you do have that option in the K800i.

Work that one out.

So if you don't have a 3g sim then the video call wont work? Can you get one and still keep the same number, e.g. Asking 02 to send you a new sim card?

Yeah just phone o2 customer care and say you want a USIM. You can transfer you're number and credit, bolt ons or whatever you have on you're account to it.

If you have low or no 3g signal you may find it better adding the 3g network setting to your shortcuts and using it to force onto 2.5g

I do that at home and signal flies up.

unfortunately, locking to 2G (2.5G is a media myth) that means you cant video call or download quickly.

your stuck with a realistic throughput of around 25Kbps... if your lucky, although on O2, as they are about out of 2G capacity, you will be lucky to get that.....

3G would get you around 300-350Kbps at the moment...
