it's like US has became japan (in 3G point of view). a few years ago, only "world" phones (quadband) only work everyehere (except japan). today, (dualmode) phones work everywhere and even japan, except 3G in US.
3G is just starting. don't expect too much from it. But, i've heard about a dopod branded phone which is HSDPA and dual band 3G(US and international 3G) and quad band GSM. i Don't know how much it costs though...

It's really awful.. You can find a very nice phone, but you can't use it everywhere despite the fact that your home operator might have roaming with a foreign operator.. Because the mobile system/frequency doesn't suit.
