Agree with you partially. RAM can improve overall system performance but it cannot improve performance of individual app. And a phone is not like a PC with many of background programs running.

Which is faster in recoding dvd to divx?
1. 500Mhz with 2GB RAM?
2. 1.6GHz with 512Mb RAM?

The answer is obvious.

There are some apps which requires a faster cpu period. Just like Skype or 3D gaming (like the new ngage platform). So the slower p700 cpu may not even support the real skype when it is out for the symbian platform.

it's not as simple as you make it... and face it most of the apps that you run on your smartphone are more ram intense then processing power based... it's not like you're encoding videos or your phone on a regular basis

A slower processor with plenty of ram beats a fast processor crippled by too little ram.....

Why nokia & not build phone, like pocket pc devices?
A lighting fast pxa 624mhz with 256mb ram.
I wonder, when light os such as symbian running on devices based on ppc spec.
I'm sure, it feels like going to heaven! wohooo

@nokiamaniax

PPC devices even at higher CPU speeds in real life do not out perform Symbian devices by as much as you'd expect. No PPC device has the video capture (e.g. N95) or playback quality (e.g. SE M600) of Symbian devices from my experience.

As far as I know, PPC devices don't have a very good battery life either. I've played around with an HP IPAQ and never could get to the end of the day.

i'll be a little disappointed if the phone was released without a camera cover. It was a problem with the w810 having a scratched screen

After what seems like hours, I finally got to the end of this thread.

I can't bear to look at the other one and I'm still not clear on couple of important points.

1; Is this any sort of successor to the p990 - i.e. is it more fully featured and is there now any point in upgrading to a P990?

2; If it is not, is there likely to be a successor to the P990 any time soon?

A faster processor is only crippled when there is not enough RAM in which case you get a "Memory Full" since there is no RAM swapping to disk. As long as it is not in "memory full" situation, a faster processor still outperform a slower one.

ares
mib1800, agreed, but in the p700 vs n95 case the processor is not 2 times more powerfull AFAIK...

It is about 1.3 times more by processor speed but taking into account better graphic processor of N95 it may be more. With the current RAM level of N95 only under a few occasion (like surfing to huge web page and having Gallery open at same time) then you may hit memory full. So 80-90% of the time you can use it to full speed potential.

The P700 advantage is that you never have to worry about "memory full" again. But under most normal usage scenario, it will most likely to perform slower than N95 esp. in multimedia intensive ops like UI, video playback or surfing the web.

Like I say, if SE priced p700 at least 30-40% lower than N95, it would make an attractive buy for someone who needs a smartphone. I may even trade in my Atom for this.
