I agree that the development cost of the P910 does not seem high, and the revenues until christmas are more than enought to cover the costs.
3G is the future, but not yet!
Just look at the sizes of those phones, and the autonomy!!
The duration of the battery of the *worst* GSM phone is higher than the *best* 3G phone to date!

Lau, i have a 3g phone, it is neither large nor heavy on the battery. I think those days are gone. Check LG's range of 3g phones.

I've looked at the LG phones and seem ok
Anyway, you must agree that smallest 3G phone is larger and heavier than the smallest GSM phone.
I read that the battery duration is proportional to the strength of your 3G network reception and how long you use the 3G network (maybe is mostly disconnected in your phone?).
I don't see the regular users switching from the small light phones they use today to the 3G phones we see today!
Besides, I keep seeing people around me without battery in their phones. I can't imagine those people having a phone that at least does not last 5 days of regular use.

I think we can all agree that there will be a P1000 (?) at some point, but I would have to agree with those who doubt its release before Christmas 2004; it just doesn't seem likely to me. The P910 has just been announced and the marketing campaign hasn;t even begun properly yet; to announce a newer model so soon makes to business sense, it would only serve to undermine sales of the P910.
With new smartphones set to be released by rival companies SE will obviously be looking to protect its market share, to that end I can envisage their next smartphone being released next year. This would have the benefit of allowing them a less cluttered market, in which to compete; rival smartphones having already been available for sale by that point. SE will need to include many new features in their next smartphone to make it a serious rival to those of their rivals, this will obviously increase costs. The last thing SE will want is to have two of their own products competing with one another.
I think that we can expect to see news of another 3G mobile phone as well as new GSM phones and perhaps the odd accessory or two. I am not saying that this is what will happen, SE may very well announce a new smartphone, but I just don't see that being the case.

I can see what you are saying, but my LG 8110 is about the size of a samsung clamshell, and no heavier, although there are definately smaller GSM phones about! Maybe in a few months we will start to see smaller 3g phones around. The battery life, well, i only need to charge it about every 5 days, the only extra battery drain compared to a gsm phone (that i have noticed, at any rate) is when i've made quite a few video calls.

I think the LG 8110 will be looked upon as being the the first decent 3G phone in the UK. I agree with what methylated_spirit said regarding this phone, it is a milestone in British 3G phones; it is a decent size, the battery life is acceptable, although perhaps not as good as some GSM phones and the phone offers good features and reliability. At the moment it is, along with the LG 8120, the best choice for a 3G handset in the UK.

SE did announce the S710 before the S700 was released. So from that perspective it might be possible.
