Eldar from Mobile review has confirmed that there is room for a camera in the W950i shell. Add to this 30fps and 3.2mp and we have a winner.

When, could be anyones guess.

3GSM asia is in September and another in February. It would be good if we could expect a announcement AND launch before christmas. What does it take now - about 3-4 months from announcement to launch?

Hi!

I wonder if anyone knows if there is (in near future) to be released a Walkman phone very similar to the Cybershot K800?

In some theads in this forum, people say that SE will differentiate the Walkman and the Cybershot models more than done before, and therefore, a Walkman K800 will never hit the market.

As a parallell, the K750 and the W800 were announced at the same time, although, they didn't arrive in the stores at the same time (may vs. august -05). As everyone knows, these two models were very similar. When K800 was announced, no similar W-model was announced, which implies that no Walkman K800 will come (in near future).

Or maybe, SE delays the announcement to the point of time where a Walkman K800 will be ready to be shipped?

What is your opinion regarding this?

I personally own a W800 which is in subject of being replaced (within a month), by another mobile. K800 looks very nice, although, I don't want to loose any functionality, and the only functionality K800 seems to lack are Walkman player 2.0, the walkman earplugs and walkmanstyle cover. Have I missed something?

Regards Martin

The development to announcement to release time varies. The W700 was announced on one day, and we had a working photo sample in the office THAT week. On sale shortly after. It was easy because it was based on an existing platform.

The W800i was also easy, and incidentally it wasn't announced at the same time as the K750i. I can't recall exactly what the time difference was, but think we got the news on the Walkman phone shortly before getting our pre-release K750i.

Certainly the W800i was announced before the K750i actually went on sale, and commercial reasons also play a part. SE are quite strict on their advertising campaigns (presumably to save money, if nothing else) so, if they're pushing imaging then it's logical to delay the music push until later. Hence, K800 and Cyber-shot is pushed now and in September, we'll see the return of WALKMAN with the W850 and W950. Getting a factory ramped up for production is another consideration, and then there's the necessity of getting the deals done with the operators - who themselves are concentrating on imaging today, music tomorrow and email the day after.

The P990i is a bizarred one, but not uncommon for any P-series phone!The M600i proves UIQ3 is ready. The W950 is ready (seen enough models to know that's as good as finished) so the P990 should have been out a while ago. We're getting one this week, honest.

The W800i and K750i were actually oficially announced both on the same day 1st March 2005. I just checked the press release archive.

@eztoril
Well because of SE's plan for market segmentation, it seems that we'll never get a K800 in the near future. Auto focus will never appear on a phone again.
= v2 (or any upgraded) player
K or Cybershot = autofocus

Sharilon; the w810i has autofocus and considered by most to be an 'interim' update for the W800 & k750; while its obvious the k750 evolved into the K800/790i.

There WILL be a w800 advancement, UNLESS its expected that the W850 (that slider yuck) is its upgrade.

@Prom1
Yes, the W810 does have autofocus, and so does the W800 and the W900. But I was trying to say that from now on, since the introduction of the Cybershot series, the placement of auto focus on a phone in SE's eyes would be undermining the camera qualities of the Cybershot series. This is why I highly doubt seeing a good camera on a phone ever again.
