Well, as the subject suggests, upon reading the review at mobile-review (here: http://www.mobile-review.com/review/sonyericsson-p990-en.shtml ), i noticed the following couple of sentences:

" Sony Ericsson decided on making an All-In-One smartphone to compete with all devices at once. Short term effect may be reached, however, in half a year we can expect a version of the P990 without a QWERTY-keypad. This device will be about two cm shorter and will come closer to the K750 in height."

Now this sounds much more to my tastes, and as the people at mobile-review sound fairly clued up on insider knowledge, i'd say it's a fairly good source.

If such a phone is going to be released, it will definately be the phone of choice for me...

Anyone got more info on this?

Cheers, Daz.

There is a rumour that this is already in development and will be 3G - one of a few 3G that are in development at the moment.

I am hearing conflicting views though.

Another quote said were not going to enter the mid-range market for smartphones as Nokia has already flooded this segment but, having said this, they have been known to surprise us before.

I don't see any risk in them bringing one out, they need a foothold there at least.

I would prefer it if they could take out the 3G "chip" so to speak, and make the phone smaller.

Those are my gripes with the p990, the keyboard and size/weight. If they could take out the keyboard and remove 3G and even wi-fi, but keep the rest of the functionality, maybe add a 5G jog-dial...

That would be my ideal spec.

that's a good point, getting rid of the front camera would reduce the size too...

I really want it to be as thin as possible, and the width/height really being roughly the screen size...

Well, if there's one thing Ericsson has done in the past is announce a "killer" phone months in advance, then after its release... suddenly announce a BETTER version that's already available a few months after. SE did the same with the W800 and W900 recently.

Ericsson's tactic in the past was to "launch" their next big thing...

R520 and T39 .... big launch... CNN coverage, etc... The first small triband, Bluetooth, GPRS, Lithium Polymer GSM phones on the market... all under 20mm thick. Everyone was excited... after the launch... and a few days after...out of the blue... the T68 was suddenly available on the market as well! Everything the R520 and T39 had... PLUS a color screen, and optional camera. *The R520 and T39 also had camera options back then but they weren't as popular due to their grayscale screens*

Fast forward to today... W800... "First walkman phone"... with the promise of the "Coming soon" W500 versions. Then out of the blue, the W900 comes along.

It's been and Ericsson tactic...and quite honestly, I like it. Maybe it works for them. So I wouldn't be surprised if they had a sleeper P990 that's ready for public release already.

**Had it not been for Ericsson's financial problems and Sony buying into them, Ericsson's cameraphone component provider would've been Canon. The P-series would've also sported an SD slot instead**

Thinking about this, my contract ends in december, and i definately want a new phone by then, so don't think i can wait for the p990, let alone this much improved version. (If it exists...)

anyone got more info?

May make a photoshopped version if i get the time,

Daz.
