mmm, maybe they were implying about the "3" UK sim, which will only work on 3g phones only as they restricted it, other than that i haven't heard of 3 sim. My bro has an old t-mobile sim card and just recently he bought a 3g handset (N70) all he did was to put his chip in and phone up customer services and thats it, he was able to make video calls.

Yes, a SIM card is ok. But.

A UICC/USIM will allow to use 3G security mechanisms (if such are activated by the operator). It also allows the authentication of the network by the card, something that is not possible with a SIM card.

The UICC supports also multiple applications, such as telecommunication application (i.e. the USIM itself) and possibly something else such as e.g. digital signature etc.
