you have probably heard of 3g phones
these days, the attention is to a new generation of phones
called hsdpa phones or 3.5g phones

this new technology is to offer phones the speed of broadband
so that you can not only surf the web with the greatest of speed
but watch streaming tv, movies and videos as well
- this is truly groundbreaking technology

i have been selected to test drive this high speed hsdpa highway
by m1, one of singapore's top 3 telcom company

yawn... well I have here a mobile connect card from Vodafone and I can now download 1,8 megabit/s and upload 384 mbit/s. Next year (2007) this will be 3.6 down and 1.8 up and by 2009 the speed will be 14.4 down and 3.6 up. Pretty fast if you ask me... but I have a cheap adsl connection of 4mbit, but a medium connection is 20mbit and a premium is 100mbit and what will broadband be by 2009? 1 gigabit? there are already places on earth where 1 gigabit is standard and 100 gigabit will be there within 2 years. So yes HSDPA (and HSUPA) is pretty fast for a mobile connection, but will never be anywhere near a real broadband connection.

This HSDPA phone can function as a modem to your computer via the cable or BT which I think better than surf thru the phone's screen.

the singapore m1 telco loans out a usb vodaphone modem
which makes it every convenient to surf the web
on a desktop or notebook
no need for a wifi connection
it's 3.5 g all the way

That USB Device looks like the Huawei E220 which we have been using here for the past 3 months.

The software which comes with it is capable of sending and receiving SMS but unfortunately no voice calls.

I bet the customer service can - I surely look forward to a day when I can dump my hopeless home ISP (have been through several, and they're all pretty useless) and go properly wireless with just one connection. I don't spend my life uploading and downloading thousands of meg a day from my home PC - if you do, fair enough, fixed-line will, for the foreseeable future, have a higher bandwidth. But personally, between a solid 2 Mbps or a flaxy, outage-peppered 8 Mbps, I'll take the steady option, thanks...
