An interesting development.

Sony adds mobile phone functionality to its Walkman NW-A808 media player

Sony seems to be going against the trend to add a media player to a mobile phone by doing the reverse - adding phone functionality to a Walkman.

If reports coming out of the Far East are to be believed, that's the case with the latest version of the Sony Walkman NW-A808 player. Pictured here, the new version doesn't look much different than existing models, except for the new colour choice of white or pink. But the 8GB Walkman is said to house basic mobile phone functionality, such as calling and texting, as well as music and video playback.

There's no phone keys and no touch screen - the only keys are the ones you see. So we remain slightly sceptical until the official Japanese launch date of July 10th. It should retail for the equivalent of £140.

yeh saw that one earlier and didn't know what to make of it?

Find rather hard to believe that Sony would add phone functionality to its line? ...although it still may be true, will have to wait and see.

No pictures available yet.

I remember a clause in the JV agreement which stated both parent companies are still free to make their own branded handsets.

If this turns out to be true, will Ericsson be invited to follow suit? Now thats a big question.

Not long till we find out in a weeks time.

With Sony having licenced the brand to the merger, why would Sony do this now...it just doesnt make any sense?

Surely this move if true would effect phones sales?

Well maybe Sony sees a market for an advanced with the basic phone calling functions as a secondary feature.

Sony Ericsson has been making the reverse - a phone with a as a secondary feature.

We also have to ask how numbers would be dialled on this with no keypad.
Would your contact numbers be preloaded?
How would they be transferred onto this device?
