Dear all,

I have a imate k-jam that supports GPRS and EDGE. I use it as a modem to my laptop. I am from Egypt and soon my network will offer 3G services.
I am only interested in HSDPA speeds for internet because i don't have internet @ home.
so, if i have a 3G SIM card + imate kjam, can i still connect my k-jam to my laptop and have 3G speeds on my laptop or does my k-jam has to be 3G enabled.
I always think of the mobile as a medium and what is important is the SIM card.
I am thinking of buying a 3G modem the Huwaei E270 but so far i wanna make sure whether this mobile issue would work or not.
Thank you

Sadly, it's both the SIM card *AND* the device which need to be able to use 3G for it to work. 3G uses different radio frequencies (for starters), so even if you use a 3G sim, if it's not in a 3G device, it will not work.

Needless to say, you may find that your provider will allow you to use unlimited data, even without 3G. If you can tolerate the slower speed of GPRS then you may as well save the money and not buy the USB modem. It's also worthwhile checking that you will get a strong 3G signal where you live before buying, also.

in some countries it is not necessary to have a 3g sim, you only need a 3g device to get 3g speeds - france is one, not sure which network.

the sim has no impact perse on the speed, it's all in the phone. But some operators need higher capacity sims to support 3G customers. The 3G sims are really just normal sims with better memory (in basic terms).

For example, I had a non-3G sim (from my K750) that I put in my K800, the operator upgraded the sim to 3G via the airwaves - no new sim was needed, it was just a switch at the operator end that needed flicking.

So it's not the sim per se that needs to be changed but it's programming.

On the other hand, vodafone don't offer this service and they make you get a new sim.

Of course a 3G capable phone is needed, regardless of the sim type.
