via Wired

New EU regulations that are set to be introduced in May 2011 will mean that mobile users in Britain will have to be given the option of a 12-month contract

...

The agreement also puts an upper limit of 24 months on the maximum contract length

That's excellent news. If you consider the fact that most contracts come to far more than the price of the handsets. People seem to have little choice & it's wrong

Just because they have to, doesn't mean they'll also be forced to put out any decent deals does it?
Nice to have it capped at 24 months though, hopefully consumers will pressure companies into offering 18 month contracts as the sweet spot once again

Yeah I did once see a 36 month Orange plan. I think yes that the 12 month deals won't be as good & you'll pay more for the handset.

About time to, It's been a proper rip off having to take out new contracts over 2 or 3 years just to get a new phone.

My contract with T Mobile ends on 13/11/2012 but I am very happy with them they have been excellent. Although not with the phone so I been buying new ones. Again Tesco is the only network that still do 12 months I think

This doesn't change anything in Holland. We can get 12 month but not with good deals. I wish they did 18 months here

I haven't had a contract for a long time but I may well be tempted again if they are this short and relative to 18 and 24 month contracts, especially for my annual iPhone purchase!

Great news. Will be getting a 12 monther when my 24 monther runs out, in October 2012 :/ However as long as the deals are reasonable. Pretty much all contracts are now 24 month, the 12 month ones will probably be double the price, making it cheaper to simply buy a new phone halfway through. May even just go back to sim only.

How they expect some of the phones on the market to last 24 months. My old K850 barely lasted 6.
