Wouldn't this remove the risk of the buttons crushing the display?

Plus the ability to just close the flip to lock the phone is still there...
And it would protect from scratches.

If you seriously want to do this, buy and extra keypad/flip then experiment. I was actually planning to do something similar, except, I was planning to replace the keypad with a clear hardshell plastic to protect the screen...similar to the transparent flip cover of the new iPaq

Removing them won't harm the phone....
And I realise that many people are using them. But There's also alot of people who removes the keypad completely. And there's people like me. Who doesn't use the buttons but keep them for the ability to lock the phone in a quick and simple way(It also exits any applications).
