I have a movie that I want to recode to 3GPP and put on my P800 and am wondering if anyone knows the best way to remove the black bars above and below a wide screen avi file? I have a movie that I want make a best of kind of deal to show to a friend. I have the DVD, QuickTime Pro, Power Director Pro and My DVD. QuickTime Pro and Power Director Pro say they can edit a vob file (that I decrypted for the DVD) directly but when I try to out put the file the programs will crash or I don’t get sound in the finished file. So, I have been capturing the movie from the DVD to an avi file and then using QuickTime to recode the file into the 3GPP format. Which works but then I have the black bars in the video cam player.

Also, do I have to upgrade the firmware to be able to play 3GPP files with the video cam software from the Memory Stick Duo?

Thanks.

the cam should play .3gps anyway.
If you have the .avi file just grab virtualdub (freeware)
you can use this to crop the image, removing the black bars,
then encode it into .3gp.

to remove the black bars:-
open Virualdub,
Video\Filters
Add 'null transform' enter
then cropping will be available on that screen
adjust the axis to remove them.
then F7 or File\Save to AVI.

I've tried just about everthing to remove black bars from my avi files, now, I've found the answer and I already had it!
Use Media Player Classic. Go to view, video frame, overide aspect ratio, set the aspect ratio to 4:3. Watch movie on your large screen tv with no black bars.
Thankyou, thankyou

Wouldn't that just stretch the picture? The only "proper" way to remove black bars is to remove the left and right parts of the picture enough so that it is the correct aspect ratio.

I recommend iDealshare VideoGo which can crop video to remove the black board or bars of a video file.

Step by step guide at http://idealshare.net/video-converter/video-cropper.html

It can easily crop all kinds of video files whatever it is in AVI, MP4, MKV, VOB, WMV, MOV, FLV, 3GP, SWF, OGV, WebM, RMVB, Apple ProRes, MXF, AVCHD, MTS, MOD, TOD, DV, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, DivX, Xvid and etc. It even helps to download and crop YouTube videos.
