mik, naming a folder "alarms" doesn't do anything for alarms. for alarms, you'll notice that you're given a choice of either ringtones, mp3, video, and somethign else (my phone is switched off at the mo so i cant check). the ringtones come from the ringtone folder and the mp3 come from the mp3 folder. naming a folder "alarms" doesn't do anything - i've tried renaming it to "alarm", "Alarm", "alarms", and "Alarms", and it doesn't do jack.
there should only be 3 folders for audio for them to be correctly associated with the appropriate tone - "mp3", "ringtones", and "notifications".
the "mp3" folder is your music that appears in the music application on the phone

well I can't say I've ever used a Motorola Android device but on HTC and Sony Ericsson devices it is quite true that alarms can be added to the following folders:
SDcard/alarms
SDcard/media/alarms
SDcard/media/audio/alarms
and possibly other variations.
Shall I create a video for evidence of this?
Also the following are quite acceptable for music in the media player and are actually the usual Android naming rather than MP3:
SDcard/music
SDcard/media/music
SDcard/media/audio/music
