HTC are definitely the leaders with Android especially with devices such as the Evo and Desire HD.

The X10 still has the best camera out there....and there an X12 comin out...rumouredly with 2.3..SE still does great Hardware..usually better than HTC...except maybe the Legend...I personally own a Desire, and am not too kicked with the build...especially the battery cover...not to mention the internal app memory, which errrm...I've been able to overcome ...
To cut a long story short...SE is usually slow picking up ( Remember the X1..wm days) ...but gets better ....and there are always customization options available in the open source world
