To be honest, and you're not going to like this, it's probably time for a new phone. You can pick up a Nokia 1100 for about £40 on Pay As You Go. It's not even worth getting the phone professionally looked at as the charge will probably exceed it's value. If it's a 3310, it hasn't had a bad run, and your son's probably just tipped it over the edge.

I reckon your son dropped it and it's dislodged something somewhere. I would try banging the bottom of the phone on the table a couple of times. Always worked when the screen went on my mates phones!

It sounds like it could be a software problem I'm afraid - I had a similar problem with a 3310. I changed the sim card reader, cleaned all the contacts carefully with an alcohol rub, cleaned the PCB with a toothbrush - all no joy. Apparently a software problem can cause this. The phone will need reflashing, which will cost you probably a similar amount to that new Nokia 1100. I've seen those advertised for £29.99 - I forget where, I think it's The Link or one of the network's phone shops.
