Intel's CEO says WiMAX competitive with DSL, cable

Chief Executive Craig Barrett said on Friday that new wireless high-speed data technologies would be competitive with Internet links provided by cable and phone companies.

Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is pushing WiMAX, which would provide high speed data over areas as large as a small city, as a way to spread cheap yet ubiquitous wireless broadband access. Intel is hoping to replicate the success it had in popularizing the short-range wireless WiFi standard popular in airports and coffee shops...

See VHS against Betamax. With too many technologies competing for the same customer base only a few can win. I doubt that wifi-max. will make it into cell phone networks.

Remember that WiMAX isn't scheduled to implement handover until earliest 2007. So no big threat to 3G.

Also, it's not supposed to replace WiFi, only to complement it.

It's allready out in Belgium, limited for Brussels: clearwire.be

I'm very dissapointed by the offer, you still need a modem so it means that you are not mobile like wifi hotspots, what's the use then ? In a city, fiberoptics are everywhere so cable or dsl connections are not a problem, the price is the same and my ISP has wifi hotspots a bit everywhere in Belgium and free to use!

I asked them the same questions, still waiting for a reply ...
