@aatuif

3.5G which is already with us hence HSPDA and will be followed by the very unoriginal 4G etc etc.

@occupied

Although WiMax was being hailed as the next big thing now that HSPDA is starting to offer such high download speeds and these Networks are already in place. I no longer see WiMax as this great threat to mobile Networks but only time will tell.

dunno is it me or my netwk sux but i found that hsdpa runs on edge speed (about 80kbps or so. i'm on a 3g net which implements hsdpa).
besides wimax wouldn't cost telecom providers as much as gsm/umts/hsdpa. in the amount of bts they have to build at least

I use 3G with my laptop on occasion (3-4 times per month) for mobile web browsing. Usually have no problem getting 3G and on UK Orange you can have unlimited usage for one day for £1 (PAYG) which is much cheaper than a WiFi bundle or hotel WiFi cost. Great when away on business.

I have 3G service plan but I seldom use 3G service, mainly due to battery life problem. I have used video call for about a minute so far just for testing. Only one if my friends had 3G service, now he has switched to 2G, with whom I had tested. Actually this service plan is waste of money.

For the handset, I sometimes need roaming in Japan and Korea and 3G handset eliminates need of hiring compatible handset, usually with new number.

@psikey

I would advise you to be careful as you may find that that £1 day rate excludes using your phone as modem and only covers browsing on the phone. It may even exclude IM and VOIP as well as steaming services also.

@tk338

Yes at the same rip off price still from 02 I'm afraid i must admit every time i look at a phone on 02 and then get to their Data add on it does crack me up. I mean really £3 for 2mb or £5 for 4mb even with the included 1mb a month allowance that is a joke. On T-Mobile i get up to 1GB a month for £7.50 i wouldn't even get 10mb for that amount of money with 02 what a rip off.

PS. If you travel to Japan and/or South Korea you also need a 3G phone, because there is no good old GSM.

PPS. Japan and S. Korea (and Chine but it has moved to 1700/2100,afaik) ain't using 3G common standardisation

The 3G (UMTS 2100, also known as WCDMA 2100) works also in Japan and South Korea. You can check it from GSM Association website: www.gsmworld.com.

(I have been told that information also by my home operator, who has 3G raoming in Japan and in South Korea.)

i like 3g, fast and wireless connection to the web.
however it's costs are usualy high. Because of the outragious licenses the providers had to pay.
but there are some downsides with it, like most providers here. You're not allowed to view streaming video (youtube), listen to your favorite radio streams, use a voip-service.
3g is realy great i think... or at least i could be
